Prepare InDesign document

After the InDesign presettings, we now come to the editing of the InDesign document (template).

For this, all elements must be placed on certain layers and provided with tags and, if necessary, attributes.

General notes:

  • For vector graphics, files in SVG or PDF format must be used. (EPS, Illustrator, Corel, etc. is not possible). SVGs always use RGB colour space, which means that slight colour deviations occur while creating printing data (conversion to CMYK). If SVGs are placed as assets in the template, at least PDF 1.4 (X4) compatibility must be used to generate the template's background PDF). (The use of PDFs as media type is not permitted by default and must be approved in advance if desired: For individual templates: Edit Template > Editor > Media Types; generally: Settings > Media > Media Restriction.)
If PDFs are used as assets in the InDesign template, the PDFs placed in the IDML file must have at least the same standard (as well as PDF 1.4 compatibility or higher) as the background PDF created later.

  • The opacity of SVG files cannot be changed in the editor.

  • Use the following options SVG Options for saving: Decimal places: 3 (at least), deactivate Responsive.

  • (Vector) shapes out of InDesign (= ShapeBlocks) cannot be scaled in the printformer editor.

  • (Vektor-)Formen aus InDesign (= ShapeBlocks) können im printformer Editor nicht skaliert werden.

  • The kerning Metrics is used for texts in the printformer; adjustments to type width (e.g. Tracking or Kerning) or extended character styles (e.g. Scale, Skew, Baseline Shift etc.) cannot be applied. (If text was formatted with one of these styles in the InDesign template, it is reset in the printformer).

  • Text frames can be created with the Text Frame Option Inset Spacing.

  • Text frames should not be reduced with the Fit Frame to Content command, otherwise the last line of text may be cut off in the printformer editor.

  • If the template contains empty text blocks (for filling by user in the editor) whose font formatting is predefined, a Paragraph Format must be assigned to the charakters and an Object Format to the text frame in InDesign. (Otherwise, the default formatting is used in the editor).

  • If an image placeholder is created that is to be filled later by the Media Hunter, it must not contain a default image (empty rectangle frame).

  • Tagged (later editable) elements must not be placed on master pages (otherwise, for example, the function of the PFNonPrint layer will not work).
